Book Review: Ultra-Metabolism: The Simple Plan for Automatic Weight Loss
Mark Hyman, M.D

The Ultra-Metabolism plan is broken down into 7 Keys – Controlling your appetite, reducing/handling stress, controlling inflammation, preventing oxidative stress, exercise, maximizing the thyroid hormones and cleansing toxins from your liver.
I LOVED the each chapter explained why these whole, fresh foods helped with the specific key in discussion. Part 1 of the book discussed 7 weight loss myths, and why they are myths and while I knew most of them, I’ve never had them explained so well! Part 2 discusses the 7 Keys, and Part 3 jumps into the Ultra-Metabolism Prescription. I can’t wait to start on this!
I think this book is a must read for EVERYONE! While PCOS only has a single mention on one page, in the story of a patient, all of the information in the book can help to combat many of the health issues which tend to come along with PCOS, such as insulin resistance/metabolic syndrome, for which I can count 30 pages of mention in the index. Each key starts with a quiz to help you determine how significantly you are struggling with the specific key, which helps you to see if you need to add supplements or possibly see a doctor for testing (specific tests for each key are even listed at the end of the chapters!). In the end, like I said,
I think everyone should read this book. Even if you don’t want to go all out and follow the Prescription specifically, there is a wealth of knowledge in this book, and while we all know that packaged foods are bad and fresh foods are good, I believe that having it all explained and laid out so we know WHY the way we were so used to eating is probably causing many of the health problems we suffer from, and changing how we eat can turn our health around!
This book was incredible. My mom gave it to me for Christmas a few years ago and I’m bummed I hadn’t read it until now. Now, the information was nothing new - the best foods for your health are whole, organic and fresh. The difference with this plan and this book, was that Dr. Hyman took it to a whole new level and REALLY explained WHY these foods are so good for us.
